Prendiamo in considerazione un verso di Orazio.
Orazio, Epistulae I, 10, 24
«Naturam expelles furca, tamen usque recurret»
“Potrai scacciare l’indole naturale con un forcone, tuttavia tornerà di nuovo”.
L’intento di Orazio è evidente: il nostro carattere e la nostra indole sono molto forti; per quanto cerchiamo di modificarli, di moderarli o di correggerli, sono impressi in noi in maniera indelebile. Un bello spunto di riflessione !
Seneca, Epistulae ad Lucilium, 50, 4
«initium ad virtutes eundi arduum, quia hoc proprium imbecillae mentis atque aegrae est, formidare inexperta»
“l’inizio per passare alle virtù è duro, perché proprio di una mente fiacca e malata è il fatto di temere ciò di cui non si è fatta esperienza”.
Secondo Seneca, il cammino che porta alle virtù è un cammino impervio e pieno di ostacoli, ma vale la pena intraprenderlo; la mente umana, tendenzialmente poco reattiva e debole, teme sempre ciò che è nuovo e non sperimentato, ma si deve applicare nel perseguire le virtù.

«eundi» è genitivo del gerundio del verbo «eo»
